Diverse Abilities Plus successfully launched its involvement in the Gold Challenge at AFC Bournemouth on Wednesday 9th March.

Around 100 local business representatives from companies including Bournemouth University, Coles Miller, Inspire Accountants – the charity’s ambassador - NatWest and HSBC attended the event to find out more about the Gold Challenge and what sports they can undertake as part of the initiative. On the day over 10 teams pledged to take part in the Challenge for Diverse Abilities Plus.

During the event Mark Powell, CEO at Diverse Abilities Plus, told the crowd about the exciting initiative and how to take part.  Warren Munson, Managing Director at Inspire Accountants, then talked to the attendees about why his company decided to sign up for the challenge as they feel that not only is the Challenge a great team event but that Diverse Abilities is a most worthwhile cause to support.

Representatives from The Dorset Taekwondo Association and Dorset’s Espada Fencing Club, who also do wheelchair fencing, led a number of sports demonstrations to inspire people. AFC Bournemouth player Steve Lovell showcased his football skills with Andy Howe, a trainee football coach, and volunteers from the crowd got involved and had a go at the sports on show.

LA Fitness from Tower Park also provided one month’s free membership as a business card draw prize. A further prize of a month’s membership at the fitness club is also up for grabs – a winner will be selected from those who sign up to the Gold Challenge by the end of March.

The Gold Challenge involves participants completing a number of Olympic and Paralympic sports by 31 December 2012. Entry can be as part of a team or as an individual, with the aim of taking part in five, ten, 20 or 30 sports. The challenge is a unique opportunity for people, of all ages and abilities, to experience Olympic and Paralympic sports, from table tennis to cycling or gymnastics, in turn raising funds for Diverse Abilities Plus.
