Caroline's story

Caroline Amey has lived in her specially adapted bungalow since 2005. She has used the services of Diverse Abilities Plus for many years, having previously attended Langside School.

'I really like living in my own house,' says Caroline. “I used to live in a big care home with lots of other people and I only had a small room there. Now, I have a whole house and a garden.

'I love my house. I chose the paint for the walls and decided how I wanted to arrange my bedroom so it’s not just the place that I live in, it’s my home. I even have my own pets here; I have a rabbit called Noodles and a budgie called Victoria. I help clean them out and I like cuddling Noodles although he can be quite grumpy sometimes!'

'I like living in my own home because I can choose what I want to do and when I do it. When I lived with lots of other people, I didn’t have the same choice. Now, it’s up to me what I do and I’m much happier. I have a lot more freedom than I had before.'

'I like to do things with my friends and the people who work for me. My favourite things to do at home are finger knitting, sewing, making cards and cooking; I especially like baking cakes. I like to help other people as well and so I do things around my house like folding my washing.'

'I go swimming a lot and I like sailing. I also go to discos with my friends and they come over to my house for coffee sometimes. I go shopping a lot, especially to garden centres. I like to buy pot plants for the garden to make it look pretty.'

'It’s brilliant here and I love the people who help me, we are all very good friends. This is the best place I’ve lived in.'
